Garam Masala

Description

Garam masala is a blend of ground spices commonly used in Indian and other South Asian cuisines. The word “garam” means “hot” in Hindi, but the term actually refers to the warmth and depth of flavor that the spices impart to dishes.

The exact composition of garam masala varies by region and individual preferences, but it typically includes spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, cumin, coriander, and black pepper. Some versions also include ingredients like bay leaves, nutmeg, or mace.

Garam masala can be added to a wide variety of dishes, including curries, soups, stews, and marinades. It is usually added towards the end of cooking or as a garnish to help bring out the flavors of the dish.

While it is possible to make your own garam masala blend by toasting and grinding whole spices, pre-made garam masala powder is widely available in grocery stores and online.
